Charity Stanley is a Latin teacher at the high school in the picture-perfect New England seaside town where she has lived all her life. A beloved character, she has inspired hundreds of students to continue their education at some of the nationâs finest colleges. A bureaucratic decision brings her into close contact with another well-known teacher who is suspected of sexual impropriety with his students. Charity refuses to consider the possibility that the rumors could be true, but doubts creep in and she takes steps that lead to a collision of these two willful personalities. Charity goes to her principal only to learn that the suspicions go back many years and that he may well have failed the legally mandated requirement of reporting such suspicions. Tension builds until Charity takes the decisive action that explodes into the extraordinary climax.

At only 206 pages, this is one of those books that I read quickly in a very short time, getting drawn into the story and not willing to put the book down until I finished it. It's set in a New England high school where Charity Stanley is a beloved and soon-to-be-retired Latin teacher. I enjoyed her characterization and felt I knew who she was, from her cardigan sweaters to her solitary but full life living in an upscale high rise building overlooking the newly renovated pier. Everyone loves and respects her as she has been a positive influence on students for many years. And then, in this last year of her tenure, she starts to suspect the football coach of improper relationships with female students. He, too, is much loved at the school because it is his sheer force of personality that has brought glory to the football team. And so the stage is set for conflict and tensions mount. The story is well crafted and it all plays out in a satisfying climax. But this book is more than the sum of its parts. It particularly impressed me as being a small glimpse into a time and a place and a way of life of this small town. The history of the mills and the conflicts between the social classes were clearly drawn. It also showed how a town could change and how urban renewal could be a positive thing. I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed the setting. I enjoyed the writing. Good book!
